It’s our Discovery episode of The Standard Variety Hour.  This week: tunes you’ve most likely never heard but should have, most found through Sound Cloud.  We also feature discoveries made in Austin during SXSW and a Random Fact That Will Make You Sit and Think Quietly for a Few Minutes about the discovery of the first genetically modified vaccine (hint: what does beer, bread and the Hep B vaccine have in common?).

SVH041 Discovery by standardvariety

Hi all!  We’re back from SXSW and getting back to work on new Standard Variety Hour episodes.  In the meantime, enjoy #40 via SoundCloud:

On this broadcast, we interview Chicago author (and previous Hoosier) Nath Jones about her first book in a series of four, The War is Language. Her collection of 101 short stories is quite good, and we encourage everyone to download a copy of the e-book. We also salute Indiana Congressman Mike Pence as the first inaugural Jerk of the Week and prepare for our upcoming Polar Plunge.

A Slice of Pi After Nychthemeron

During this episode of the Standard Variety Hour, we play Amo Joy’s latest album, a cassette opus called Across Nychthemeron, in its entirety to celebrate their upcoming release party this Friday, Sept. 17th, at the Melody Inn (free copy of cassette w/ download code with paid cover). Per a listener’s suggestion, the Random Fact that Will Make You Sit and Think Quietly delves into the Indiana Pi Bill.

Feeble Minded Dance Party

The scorching heat has subsided, at least temporarily, in the land of corn and deep fried butter and we feel like dancing. In addition to the hot, hot dance party, Kevin and Mark highlight a transcendental poetry from Austinite, Seth Walker. Our Random Fact That Will Make You Stop and Think For A Few Minutes takes us back to 1907 to the start of Indiana’s long involvement in eugenics and forced sterilization laws, then to the banks of the White River and Butlerville, IN to examine the Muscatatuck Colony.

High 5s Won’t Bogg You Down

It’s our 10th show and easily the best ever. SVH has perfected the radio High-5. We announce a new contest for a theme song… As in, we need one, and you should send us an original tune we can use to play the Standard Variety Hour in and out.  Seriously– send us a theme song. After two spoken word pieces from Adam Henzbo and St. Peace at Metric Monday, Mark exposes his love for Nikola Tesla and Kevin and Mark use their newly purchased time machine to visit Boggstown, IN.

Rooster Bill, Right?

Our ninth show!  One more until we hit the nice and round 10. In this broadcast, Kevin and Mark discuss the quasi-creepiness of The Zombies and wax poetically about hair band wall mirrors (c. 1989).  Of course, since the Indiana State Fair starts this coming Friday, Kevin reveals he’ll be camping out in the parking lot to secure his first in the door status, while Mark commits to making the rounds at the rooster crowing contest. Our Psychology of Sound makes the Bill of Rights more dramatic and riveting, and the Random Fact reveals why some love cilantro while others can’t stand the popular herb.

Prairie Home Companion Rumble at the Midway

The seventh broadcast of the Standard Variety Hour features music from the past and upcoming releases from Dead Beats and jascha.  Kevin and Mark challenge the Prairie Home Companion to a variety show match off, a rumble they know full well they’ll lose.  Both hosts reveal their deep distrust of carnival workers and midway rides, exposing childhood fears.  The SVH Random Fact That Will Make You Sit and Think Quietly for a Few Minutes discusses a tip on how to properly administer CPR, making sure your Stayin’ Alive,  and touches upon the human mind’s inert ability to remember patterns.  THREE One Minute Stories!

In the sixth broadcast of the Standard Variety Hour, Kevin and Mark continue a theme of summer driving music while examining the psychology of sound and how sound can impact mood.  The Random Fact That Will Make You Sit and Think Quietly for A Few Minutes is about Casimir Pulaski, or “What You Have to Do to Get A Bunch of Roads, Counties, Schools, and Holidays Named After You.”  Also, we’ve a moving piece from William Evans called Beautiful Biology, recorded on location when he stopped by Indy. Evans has a book available– since SVH is all about making you look good during your next dinner party, trust us: reading Evans will help.
